I think that is the point (thus the title: Lift less and gain more muscle). You are spot on in your question, and the answer may be surprising. Eccentric muscle contractions give more bang for the buck, at least in terms of strength. I train in various ways, sometimes to failure, sometimes not, but will put more focus on eccentric movements going forward. Thank you for reading the piece and for your question.
