I think about it a bit differently. For example, if you smoke cigarettes, your risk of lung cancer increases ten times compared with a non-smoker. It doesn't mean that non-smokers don't get lung cancer; they do. It is about understanding risk and then making a personal choice.

I am so sorry to hear about your brother. For my readers, in terms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) , are there substances that increase reflux? Yes, for example, peppermint and alcohol. Doesn't mean I cannot have peppermint or alcohol, just appreciate knowing the risk and making a personal choice.

Finally, while we will all die, healthspan matters, too. Living without a stroke or dementia. Quality matters, and we know that healthspan IS affected by our lifestyle choices. No guarantees; simply a change in risk. Some want longevity, too.
