Herb, thank you for reading the piece. Let me quickly take the first Q. There is no harm to the small amount of vitamin D in a multivitamin. Truthfully, as we age (and if we have a bit of extra weight) the vitamin becomes more challenging to absorb; the UV rays of the sun are so much more efficient (even as we don’t overdo so as to reduce skin cancer risk). I make upwards to 20,000 units of vitamin D in 30 to 60 minutes in Hawaii, and can store it in my body fat for up to 4 months! I get worried about overdoing when my patients are over 4,000 IU of supplemental vitamin D (hyperparathyroidism risk with its associated affect on calcium). The other Qs are too complex to answer quickly, but you may find my recent post on how I personally avoided statins by turning to aggressive management of lifestyle.
