First, from a cancer perspective, there is no safe dose of alcohol. That's the conclusion of the American Cancer Society. On the other hand, seven standard drinks weekly for women (and, as you alluded to, 14 for men) does not appear to shorten life for most. In general, while men are more likely to drink alcohol and consume larger amounts, biological differences in body structure and chemistry lead most women to absorb more alcohol and take longer to metabolize it.
